Sleep, child, dream,

the sun is gone. The moon

slips in beside you, gaze

locked on your baby picture

tacked to the wall. It’s impossible

to keep you from pain. Forgive

me. I see you naked, young

and scared. I want to run

and embrace you. I never deny

you anything, tell myself

this is not you: concrete mask, vacant

eyes, every gesture mechanic—

rigid. I need to find you

in this disguise, trapped inside

the parody. I look

in the mirror, find you housed

within me. Without knowing, I always

believed in you. You awaken the stranger

in my reflection. I promise

to love you this way, or not at all.
